Siesta Key_Sarasota

Day One: Beach_Eat_Drink

  1. Arrived in Early afternoon and went straight to Siesta Key Village, essentially, Ocean Blvd lined with shops and restaurants.  Parking is tough, but they have a trolley that runs up and down the island to allow you to get to the village without parking there.
  2. 2:00PM.   Gilligans Island Bar and Grill (5253 Ocean Blvd).  We were starving so both of us got the "Big Kahuna Burger", a cheeseburger in paradise.   It was delicious, good ice tea as well.  The nachos looked good as well.   See more in the section below.
  3. 3:30-7:00PM.    Checked into our Airbnb, it was midway down the island in a condo community with three pools and a section of private beach with beach chairs so no need to drag chairs down to the beach.  This place was a really good value.   We went down to the beach which faces southwest so you get plenty of sun and beautiful sunsets over the gulf.  The fine white powder sand is cool, unlike the Atlantic coast, you can walk without burning your feet.  The water is blue.  There is a reason Siesta Key beach is considered the #1 beach in America.  We sat on the beach, listened to music on our bluetooth speaker, read books, then headed up to the pool near our condo before getting ready for the night.
  4. 7:30PM+.  Captain Curt's Crab and Oyster Bar (1204 Old Stickney Point Rd) is more than a bar, it has a restaurant, a "sniki tiki bar" and a gift shop, so it's a bit of a destination.  See more in section below.

Day two: Sarasota and more siesta

  1. 8:00AM.  Mojo Risn' Coffee Co.  (5251 Ocean Blvd).  Stop for coffee, vanilla late, for the drive up to Sarasota.  See more below.
  2. 8:45-9:45AM.  Pastry Art Cafe & Dessert (1512 Main St).   Fun little breakfast/dessert spot with paintings from a local artist in beautiful downtown Sarasota.  See more below.
  3. 10:00-12:00PM.  City Sightseeing Trolley Tour of Sarasota (1826 4th St).  Sarasota has a surprisingly interesting history.  Bonus:  Great Restaurant tips.  See more below.
  4. 12:00-3:00PM.   St Armands Circle on Lido Key  was on the tour, described as the Beverly Hills of Sarasota built by the visionary John Ringling.    We ate lunch at the famous Columbia Restaurant, (411 St Armands Circle), see more below.  Walk to Lido Key beach.
  5. Alternative:  Tour the Ringling Brothers home and museum.
  6. 3:00-4:00PM.  Sun King Sarasota Brewery (1215 Mango Ave).  Cool warehouse location, see more in section below.
  7. 4:30-7:30PM.    Back to the beach and pools.
  8. 8:00PM+.    Siesta Key Oyster Bar (5238 Ocean Blvd).  A live music location with a menu well beyond Oysters.   See more below.

Day Three: Bikes, Brews, Venice, beach

  1. 9:00-10:00AM.  Venice Island Coffee (200 Miami Ave, Venice).   Small, bright coffee shop with decently big menu and small patio.  See more below.   It does not have a website.
  2. 10:00-11:00AM.  Shopping in Venice.  Went to two consignment shops:  St Marks Divine Consign (212A S Tamiami Trail) and Baypoint Church  Bargin Center (233 W Miami Ave) in downtown Venice.  Also, Tidwell Treasures in the plaza where we rented bikes just a few miles away.   Scored a Tommy Bahama shirt and brand new sun glasses for a few bucks.
  3. 11:00-3:30PM.  Bike Legacy Trail between Venice and Sarasota.   The bike rental shop, Real Bikes (581 US 81 Bypass N), is right on the bike path. See more below.
  4. 12:30-1:30PM.  Calusa Brewing (5701 Derek Ave, Sarasota).  About 12 miles up, great light and heavy beers, see more below.
  5. 4:00-7:00PM.    Back to the beach and pools.
  6. 7:30-8:00PM.  Island House Tap and Grill (5110 Ocean Blvd).  Long wait to eat (good sign) so sat at the bar and had a beer.  I cheated a little bit did not drink local b/c there was an IPA from Burial (Asheville) on tap and that's one of my favorite breweries.  Nice little bar could have hung out longer but the wait to eat was too long (good sign).   Kristi got the key lime wheat from Big top and liked it very much.
  7. 8:00PM+.   Hub Baja Grill (5148 Ocean Blvd).  Another fun place with live music on the patio.  Hub SIgnature Margarita and El Jefe Burrito were good, would recommend this place.

More tips for SIesta Key

  1. More Suggestions, maybe take several 3dayvacations:     Siesta Key is about lounging on the beach.  However, when we go back, I will spend some time in St. Petersburg, there are good bike and mural tours.  Also, lots of breweries to hit in and around Tampa.
  2. Missed out on the Sunset Tour.   Did not get to Turtle Beach.  Too little time in downtown Venice.

Details & Descriptions

Gilligans Island Bar and grill

Captain Curt's crab & Oyster bar

Gilligans Island Bar and Grill is a fun spot with live music daily and nightly.  Nice Patio out back which is shared with Mojo Risn' Coffee.  Great to hang out, drink margaritas, and listen to live music.  Good menu, next time nachos.

Captain Curt's crab & Oyster bar

Captain Curt's crab & Oyster bar

Captain Curt's Crab and Oyster Bar is more than a bar, it has a restaurant, a "sniki tiki bar" and a gift shop, so it's a bit of a destination.   We ate at the tiki bar where a 90's alt rock band played, Pearl Jam & Nirvana.  Clam chowder may be the best I've ever had, more clams than potatoes.

Mojo risn' coffee co.

Mojo Risn' Coffee Co.; yes, think Jim Morrison, the lizard king.   A very colorful spot on the outside, dimmly lit by white strands of christmas lights on the inside.   Great patio in front and back, coffee, smoothies and pastries.

Pastry Art cafe & dessert

Pastry Art Cafe & Dessert is a colorful coffee shop with plenty of breakfast and lunch options.  Large outdoor patio on the street, we had bagels and a delicious breakfast sandwich.

Sarasota trolley tour

City Sightseeing Trolley Tour of Sarasota was fascinating.  Sarasota was settled by Scottish immigrants, including the "father of Sarasota", John Gillespie.  It was essentially a jungle.  Then there are the Ringling brothers, incredible wealth, nice house.  And the giant statue of Sailor kissing Nurse in Time Square on VJ day, doint know why it's in Sarasota?

Columbia REstaurant

Columbia Restaurant came highly recommended by the tour guide and others on the tour.  It did not disappoint, great Cuban and the salad,,, oh ,,, the salad, made right at the table, sooo good.  We had to wait but so worth it, I know we will go there again.   This is a Kristi Jump favorite.

Sun king sarasota Brewery

Sun king sarasota Brewery

Sun King Sarasota brewery is a great spot with some easy drinking brews.  Kristi likes the orange vanilla cream ale while I do a flight of a wide variety of IPAs.  We went to two locations in Indianapolis.  They have multiple locations in Indiana and this one in FL, and retained the small brewery quality.

Siesta key oyster bar

Sun king sarasota Brewery

Siesta Key Oyster Bar is a lively place with live music, some local beers, and a big menu.  It's one of those places with dollars bills stapled everywhere signaling to customers to expect energy and rowdy.  Wings and Seafood Jambalaya were delicious.

Venice island coffee

Venice Island Coffee is a light, bright, clean coffee ship with fresh food.  It has a small patio. This seems to be a place with local regulars, a hangout for recent retirees.

Real Bikes

Real Bikes in Venice was a perfect place to rent a bike, right on the bike path, knowledgeable and helpful staff, and low prices (only $25 for day).  Option:  rent an E-bike, take more time, cover more ground.

LEgacy Trail

Legacy Trail in Florida runs about 18 miles between Sarasota and Venice.  We biked about 12 miles up to Calusa Brewing and back.  Great ride, flat and easy.  We could have gone further.

calusa brewing

Calusa Brewing is a highly rated  brewery with variety and unique beers.  Definitely, a place for flights.  Florida Flavor is a lager and fantastic, perfect for day drinking.  7 IPAs on tap, oh yah!   Kristi had a good non-sour fruit beer.
