Memphis

Day One: National Civil Rights Museum & Food Tour

  1. Flew in late on a Thursday night.  Checked into a fantastic Airbnb in a condo of a repurposed historic hotel in the South Main area.  Walking distance to Beale and only a few blocks from National Civil Rights Museum.  Just can't stop singing "Walking in Memphis"
  2. 9:00-9:45AM.   Sunrise Memphis (670 Jefferson Ave).  Funky breakfast spot.  see details below.
  3. 10:15-1:00PM.  National Civil Rights Museum (450 Mulberry St).  Built around the facade of the Lorraine motel and the balcony where "shot rings out in the Memphis sky, Free at last, They took your life, but they could not take your Pride".   See more below.
  4. 2:00-5:30PM. Taste of Downtown Memphis Food Tour (175 Peabody Pl).  What a great deal, lunch, dinner, and loads of Memphis history from the locally born and raised tour guides.  See details below.
  5. 5:30-6:30PM.  Rum Boogie Cafe (182 Beale St).  Bar with live music, a guitar museum, and award winning Gumbo.  See more below.
  6. 6:45-7:30PM.  Ghost River Brewery (341 Beale St.).  Had a flight, good Golden Ale and double IPA.
  7. 7:45PM+.    Jerry Lee Lewis Cafe (310 Beale St.).  A building that looked like the French Quarter, good live music and drink.

Day two: CIty Tour, Sun Studio, and BB King

  1. 8:00-8:45AM.  Hive Bagel & Deli (276 S Front St).   NY style bagels and pastries.  Got an Everything Bagel and a fantastic cinnamon roll.   Coffee was excellent, Kristi raved about the Vanilla Latte, we had to go back there the next day for coffee.
  2. 9:00-1:30PM.  Memphis City Tour with Sun Studio Admission (119 Riverside Dr).  Peabody Ducks, Millionaire Row, St. Judes, Many locations and stories.  HIghlight was the Sun Studio Tour (706 Union), see more below.
  3. 2:00-5:00PM.  Local Brewery and Shopping time.  Hit multiple consignments and thrifts on east side and stopped for flights at two breweries:   Hampline Brewing Co (584 Tillman), see more below, and Wiseacre (2783 Broad Ave) -  large, popular place with indoor and outdoor seating.  Wiseacre has grown from local to regional, I get it when we visit family in Knoxville.
  4. 5:30PM+.  BB KIng's Blues Club (143 Beale St).   Had to wait in line for about 20 minutes to get in, but ended up with great seats facing the stage.  See more below.

Day Three: Graceland, Bass Pro Shop, Beale

  1. 9:00-9:45AM.  Arcade (540 S Main).  A Memphis classic and Elvis favorite, see details below
  2. 11:00-2:30PM.  Graceland (Elvis Presley Blvd), much more than the house, see details below.
  3. 3:00-3:45PM.   Bass Pro Shop at the Pyramid (1 Bass Pro Dr).  The giant pyramid was once the home to NBA team Memphis Grizzlies and is now a giant Bass Pro shop complete with a restaurant and observation deck accessible via two free standing elevators.
  4. 4:00-5:00PM.  High Cotton Brewing (598 Monroe).  Friendly place with good beer, see more below.
  5. 5:30 to 7:30PM.    Exploring Beale St.  Beale Sweets Sugar Shack famous for fudge and nostalgic candys (they had bottle caps). A. Schwab is a general store/soda fountain/museum established in 1876,  Lansky's at Peabody.   Just naming a few of the many shops.
  6. 7:30PM+.  Silky O'Sullivan's (183 Beale St).  Fun dualing piano place with large courtyard.  See more below

More tips for a Memphis Visit

  1. More Suggestions, maybe take several 3dayvacations:   There was not enough time to eat at all the highly recommended restaurants.  Each meal was so big we could only eat twice a day, this is why the food tour was a good move.
  2. National Civil Rights Museum, Food Tour, Sun Studio, and Graceland proved to be excellent choices.   There were many other places we didn't get to:  Staxx, Memphis Music Hall of Fame, Rock n' Soul, Blues Hall of Fame, WC Handy home, and more.  Don't think I could do five days straight,,,, prefer two, 3dayvacations.
  3. Mud Island was closed.   Memphis sign, Mississippi museum, river walk replica of Mississippi river
  4. Biking on the Mississippi next time.

Details & Descriptions

Sunrise Memphis

Sunrise Memphis is a colorful diner serving up delicious southern breakfast dishes with generous portions.   Got the "King Biscuit" - fried chicken, ham, egg on a biscuit smothered in sausage gravy.  So good, hope to get back there someday.

national civil rights museum

The National Civil Rights Museum exceeded expectations.  The galleries follow a chronological flow.  Unlike most historic museums where you must read everything, the recency of events allows for videos.  Highlights:  The actual Rosa Parks bus, the Freedom Riders bus, and MLKs room at the Lorraine motel.

Taste of Downtown memphis food tour

Taste of downtown memphis food tour was a great way to sample local favorites:  Blues City and Central Barbeque, Memphis Gumbo, and a famous cheeseburger.  On top of the food, this was a great historic walking tour.  The guides (a father/daughter team) have tremendous pride in the city they love and they have lots of stories to tell.

Rum Boogie Cafe

Rum Boogie Cafe is located on Beale St.  Guitars hang from the ceiling and over 200 autographed guitars (all the greats).  This is home to award winning Gumbo (different than NOLA Gumbo).  Fun old place established in 1895.  Picture above is not Rum Boogie, Lorraine Motel again.

Sun Studio Tour

Sun Studio Tour is amazing.  Only about 30 minutes but covers an incredible amount of music history.  This is where BB King, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins got their start.   Blues, Rock and Roll, and Country collide.   Hear actual recordings, see where Elvis recorded his first hit.

BB King's Blues Club

BB King's Blues Club is a live music venue with good food and drink.  We stopped in for a drink and the band was so good we stayed a couple hours. Lots of Motown covers, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, Jackson 5, etc.  Had Gumbo and Catfish Po Boy.  Great time.

Hampline Brewing Company

Hampline Brewing Company

Hampline Brewing Company has a great selection.  Enjoyed the IPAs, especially the double called Tandem Pilot.  Also had a good Bock and Quad.  Popular place, families with small children getting together (we actually like this).

High Cotton Brewing

Hampline Brewing Company

High Cotton Brewery was a friendly neighborhood type taproom, people walked there with their dog.  They had 10 beers on tap, I had two flights, 8 different beers, Kristi had a different one and the bartender gave me a sample of the other, all were very good.   Highlighted by a Scottish Ale, Rye IPA, and Weizenbock (an underrated beer).

arcade

Graceland

Arcade is the oldest restaurant in Memphis.  Greek revival architecture and 50's diner inside (faded boomerang table tops and lots of chrome).   Elvis sat in the back booth and ate fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.   I got "Eggs Redneck"  and Kristi got the French Toast "made the Arcade way" which is deep fried with powdered sugar, like a french toast beignet.  All very good and filling.

Graceland

Graceland

Graceland was more than a house tour.  Elvis had a stunning collection of cars.  Multiple Caddy's of course (purple and pink), Lincolns, Rolls Royces, Dune Buggies, etc.   He also had two airplanes you can walk through. We paid extra for "Entourage VIP" tickets to get some extras and to skip the line at the mansion, probably worth it.

Silky O'Sullivan's

Silky O'Sullivan's

Silky O'Sullivan's is a dualing piano bar with a large courtyard.  Our tour guide called it a "Redneck Pat O'Brien's".  I think they would be proud of that description.  It is loud, fun, rowdy.  Good beer selection (couple local IPAs) and food.  Enjoyed the Gumbo and BBQ sampler.
