Indianapolis

Day One: Monon Trial, Carmel and broad ripple

  1. From Columbus, the drive to Indianapolis is less than 3 hours, we went straight to Carmel for breakfast/brunch.
  2. 10:30-11:15AM.   Eggshell Bistro (51 City Center Dr).  Hard to describe, delicious eclectic "globally inspired" dishes and the coffee is uniquely excellent as well.
  3. 11:30AM.  Monon Trail head in Carmel.   Parked in Carmel's Arts and Design District near the intersection of Main Street and the trail.   Near Sun King Brewery (351 Monon Blvd)
  4. 11:30-1:30PM.  Bike from Carmel to Broad Ripple with stops at consignments/thrifts:  Goodwill (6110 N Keystone), Toggery Resale (1810 Broad Ripple Ave), Newman and Co (720 E 65th Street), Broad Ripple Vintage (824 E 64th Street).   Newman and Co is all men's, it's female counterpart is Amanda Exchange which we will go to later in the day near Carmel.
  5. 1:30-2:00PM.  Flower Ally (6109 Carrolton) in Broad Ripple.  A unique experience, see more below.
  6. 2:15-3:00PM.  Bazbeaux Pizza (811 E Westfield Blvd) in Broad Ripple.   New Orleans themed pizza, interesting and tasty, recommend the Bayou Chicken and the Barbeaux Special, a cajun version of margarita pizza.
  7. 3:00-4:00PM.    Bike back up to Carmel.
  8. 4:00-4:30PM. Union Breweing Company (202 Gradle Dr).  Just off the trail on South side of Carmel.  Great patio.  They don't have a website, their beer was from another brewery, so not really a brewery, but good and fun.
  9. 4:30-5:00PM.  Sun King Brewery (351 Monon Blvd).  Right on the trail.  Good line up of IPAs, as a bonus, they have a scottish ale and bock.    Kristi likes the Orange Vanilla Cream Alse.  see more below.
  10. 5:00-5:45PM.  Check out Carmel Main Street and "Arts and Design District".   The bronze statues and small shops are charming, plenty of dinner/lunch spots.  See more below
  11. Option:   Amanda Exchange (715 E Carmel).  Large place on way to downtown, all female clothes with furniture, jewelry, and decorations.
  12. 6:00-6:45PM.  Check in to Airbnb just off Mass Ave.

  6. 1:30-2:00PM.  Talbot Street Art Fair.  On Talbot Street between 16th and 20th Street.  Just walked bikes along the vendors, checking out the local art.

More tips for Indy visit

  1. More Suggestions, maybe take several 3dayvacations:     Indianapolis biking, breweries, and live music at night.  Way too many places to go.  Slippery Noodle and Rathskeller were both great, as were the breweries, but so many more we didn't get to, DIstrict Tap, Burnside Inn, Tin Roof, Elison Brewing Co, Black Acre Beer Garden, etc.
  2. Next Time:  three days will be:   Monon Trail between Carmel and Broad Ripple, Full day at Juneteeth parade and festival, Bikes and breweries on a loop of  cultural trail, white river trial, central canal towpath, monon, and downtown again.

Details & Descriptions

Monon Trail

Monon Trail between Carmel and Broad Ripple is one of our favorites.  Surprisingly rural and green surrounded by urban.

FLower Ally

Flower Ally is a unique experience.  The detached garages in the old neighborhood of Broad Ripple (think 80 year of craftsman homes) have large flower murals.  Each has a theme "Be Kind", "Be Happy", "Be Cool".

Sun King Brewery

Carmel Arts and Design district

Sunking Breweries have multiple locations in Indiana and one in Sarasota FL oddly enough.  We went to the Carmel brewery at the end of a long day of biking on day one.   It has a family atmosphere with a turf field large enough for kid's playing wiffle ball.  The picture above is from the downtown location, more of a warehouse feel.

Carmel Arts and Design district

Carmel Arts and Design district

Carmel Arts and Desing District is highlighted (in my view) by the  bronze statues, think Normal Rockwell.  You could easily spend a day in Carmel, plenty of shops and places to eat.

slippery noodle inn

Slippery Noodle Inn is a live music venue and restaurant in an old brick building.  There were two stages, back stage had an acoustic cover muscian playing all genres, and the front had a 90's cover band.   Huge Menu, better than bar food,   Nacho Grande was the choice and plenty big enough for two.

Cultural Trail

Indianapolis Cultural Trail weaves thorugh downtown highlighted by memorials, art, and buildings.  We rode down Mass Ave to White River Park.   The Indianaplois bike system is impressive, the trails are connected, Monon, Cultural, White River, Central Canal Trail.

JuneTeeth Parade and festival

Juneteeth parade and festival is a huge annual event in Indianapolis,,, 2022 was the 5th.  The food, entertainment, vendors set open at Noon.  The parade had several youth dance teams who stop and perform, colorful and fun.

White River Trail

The White River Trial heads up the White River from downtown.  Kristi climbed to the top of this castle looking building (pictured above), your not supposed to do that.  You can hook up with the Central Canal towpath up to Broad Ripple and then back down the Monon Trail for a big loop, we cut off to go to a brewery and a street art festival.

Guggman Haus Brewing

Guggman Haus Brewing Co is a large brewery with indoor and outdoor space, specializing in the low alcohol german lagers (Helles, Kellerbier) but also a nice selection of IPAs.   This is a place for flights. The sausage and cheese chacuterie is as good as it gets.

Rathskeller

Rathskeller is a large german restaurant in a big old brick buidling (an Anthenaeum) with a music venue/biergartin.  Just caught the end of the Sweet Lizzie Project and stayed for Brian Goins.  Ate Brats with krout at a picknick table.

Bob Ross Experience

Bob Ross Experience

The Bob Ross Experience is located in Ball State.  This is where the show was actually filmed with an adjoining living room.  The highlight was sifting through the paint tubes and reading those colors:  Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ocre, Sap Green.
