Charleston SC & Folly Beach

Day One: Beach_Eat_Drink

  1. Arrived in Early Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day WE and went straight to a fun Consignment Shop near the airport, stopped into the bike rental shop (Bilda Bike) to plan our day on Tuesday and went to a brewery for late lunch.
  2. 2:00PM.   Frothy Beard Brewing Company (1401 Sam Rittenberg Blvd).  Good Food and Drink, see more below.
  3. 4:00-7:00PM.    Checked into our Airbnb at Folly Beach.  It was in a condo community called Folliday Inn.  Great location, public beach access path right there, only two blocks to the beach.  Also, only a couple blocks to downtown with all the bars and restaurants.  The large community pool was refreshing when returning from the beach.   We sat at the beach and listened to music on the bluetooth speaker for a couple hours, then some pool time.
  4. 7:30-8:15PM.   Sat on the second floor patio, aka Rooftop, at Coconut Joe's (11 Center St).  Large selection of Margarita's as well as other drinks.   Had a good local IPA, Fatty Beer Works Lazy Hazy IPA.
  5. 8:30PM+.  Rita's Seaside Grille (2 Center St).  Bar atmosphere inside with live music on the outdoor patio.  Menu is full of land and sea selections, Kristi had the Grouper and I had the Cheeseburger.

Day two: Downtown Tour, Other Brother Festival

  1. 9:00-9:45AM. Harken Cafe (62 Queen St).  Coffee and pastries, See more below.
  2. 10:00-12:00PM.  Historic Charleston Guided Sightseeing Walking Tour (80 Broad St).    See more below.
  3. 12:00-1:30PM.   Walked along the waterfront to the Pineapple fountain (1 Vendue), stopped in the Griffon (18 Vendue, see below) for a beer, then through the Charleston Market Place (188 Meeting St.)
  4. 2:00-4:00PM.  Holy City Brewing (1021 Aragon, North Charleston).  Wow, huge brewery with great outdoor spaces.  There was a festival called "Other brother fest" which was a charity event for the Warrior of Surf Foundation and HEART Inclusive Arts Community.   See more below.
  5. 4:30-7:30PM.    Back to the beach and pool.
  6. 8:00PM+.    Crab Shack (26 Center St).  Super fun patio, full band music (drums, guitar, singer), Crab legs.  They were singing "Five O'clock Somewhere" when we walked by, so that closed the deal.

Day Three: Angel oak, Bikes, USS Yorktown, back to beach

  1. 8:00-8:45AM.  Lost Dog Cafe (106 W Huron Ave).  Super popular, had to wait, dog pictures everywhere in a colorful fun breakfast spot.  Good coffee, excellent Huevos Racheros with Colorado Pork Green Chilie.
  2. 9:00-9:30AM.  Angel Oak Tree (3688 Angel Oak Rd).  See below.
  3. 10:15AM.  Bilda Bike (677 King).  We rented bikes and biked over the Ravenel bridge to Mt. Pleasant and Patriot Point.   Then back over the bridge to complete the Charleston Historic downtown loop.   See more below.
  4. 11:00-1:00PM.  USS Yorktown (40 Patriot Point Rd).  Historic aircraft carrier, see more below.
  5. 1:00-3:00PM.   Back over the Ravenel bridge to the downtown Charleston loop.   Cruise through old neighborhoods, along the water front, past rainbow row  and the market place.
  6. 3:00-4:00PM.  Blind Tiger Pub (36 Broad St).   A top rated bar/outdoor patio in Charleston.  see more below.
  7. 4:30-7:30PM.  Back to beach.   Could of gone to the many highly rated breweries but wanted to get to the beach b4 heading back to Ohio.
  8. 8:00PM+.   Loggerheads Beach Grill (123 W Ashley).   Big Beach Bar and Grill with large outdoor deck.  See more below.

More tips for Charleston

  1. More Suggestions, maybe take several 3dayvacations:     So much to do, would have wanted to bike all the way to Sullivans Beach and eat at Poe's Tavern.
  2. Too many places to eat.  We went back to the beach each day, so didn't eat dinner in Charleston.
  3. Breweries abound.   We didn't go to all the great breweries, several are together just North of downtown on King Street.  Needed another day on the bike.
  4. Charleston River dogs game.

Details & Descriptions

Frothy Beard Brewing

Frothy Beard Brewing Company is a fun dog and kid friendly place with large patio, a video game room, and good food.  We got a slice of excellent NY style neapolitan pizza and split the caprese salad.  The whole menu looked good, a lot of people eating wings.   Beer selection is large,  including 3 non-sour fruit beers (Rasberry Pale Ale was great).   Had a flight with Irish red ale and the IPAs, all were good,,,  F-Bob-Bomb IPA was fantastic.

Harken Cafe

Harken Cafe has the usual coffee line up and specializes in baked goods.  We had a biscuit with compote and a chocolate chip muffin.  Very Good, the banana bread and German chocolate cake really looked great.  The atmosphere was old Charleston (or Savanah or NOLA)

Historic Walking Tour

Historic Charleston Sightseeing Guided Walking Tour took us past most of the key sights in downtown.   Stories about Civil rights leaders, the Civil war, the Revolutionary war, and architecture were fascinating.  We walked on the waterfront looking out on Fort Sumter, the Rainbow Row, and the French Quarter.

The Griffon

The Griffon is a highly rated Pub in Charleston with dollar bills all over the walls and ceiling.   Big beer list with local favorites.  The food looks good, claim to have great fish and chips.

Holy City Brewing

Holy City Brewing has fabulous spaces indoor and outdoor.   If I lived in Charleston, we would be there all the time, plenty of room for kids to run around on the lawn featuring Spanish moss adorned trees.  And the Beer, awesome selection of everything including IPAs and three saisons.

Angel oak

Angel Oak Tree is a 400 year old, giant Oak tree.  The trunk is over 25 feet around, 65 feet high, and covering 17K square feet.   Fun to walk around the old tree with sprawling branches above and on the ground.

Bilda Bike

Bilda Bike is the place to go to rent bikes in Charleston.   The staff was very helpful and they had three planned routes:   Mt. Pleasant and Sullivans Island, Downtown Loop, and Brewery route.  We rented the pedal assist b/c we wanted to cross the Ravenel bridge and cover more ground.   We went to Patriots point, then downtown loop.   Wanted to do the Brewery route, but took a vote and Kristi wins all ties, so back to the beach.

USS Yorktown

USS Yorktown is an aircraft carrier with a storied history including the WWII Pacific turning point battle of Midway.  You get to walk all the tight quarters down to the engine room to the cafeteria, library, sleeping room.   Then up  to the flight deck.  This tour also serves as a military plane museum.

BLind Tiger Pub

Blind Tiger Pub has won multiple awards for being the best bar and best outdoor patio in Charleston.  The patio with an outdoor bar is an oasis in the middle of the city.  Large beer and drink selection, but we were all water and coke after hours of biking.  Food was great, had French Onion soup, Brussle Sprouts, and Avocado Toast.

loggerheads beach grill

Loggerheads Beach Grill has a relaxing 2nd floor deck with live music and an outdoor bar.  It has the typical beach grill food from burgers to Fried Shrimp baskets.  There is also a Philly connection, an Eagles banner, Waitresses in Phillies T-shirts, and Philly Cheesesteaks on the menu.  I got the cheesesteak, very good, and Kristi had the "Carolina Shrimp", also very good.

Pineapple fountain

Pineapple fountain

Kids are allowed to play in the fountain over looking the harbor.
