Sedona_Grand Canyon

Day One: Getting to Sedona

  1. Fly into Phoenix early afternoon
  2. 3:00-5:30PM.   Drive from Phoenix to Montezuma Castle National Monument.   A short hike, .33 mile loop, takes you past the ancient structure.  Another short loop hike of .7 miles take you to the Montezuma Well.
  3. 5:30-7:00.   Complete the drive to Sedona and check into the hotel.  We stayed at the Sky Ranch Lodge Resort (1105 Airport Rd).   See more below.   TIP:   the second time we went to Sedona, we stayed at a fun AIRBNB, it was the old post office near downtown, had three bedrooms.
  4. 7:30+.   The Hudson (671 AZ-179 ste d).  A slightly upscale restaurant with great views and a menu to accommodate a wide range of tastes and budgets.  See more below.

Day two: Grand Canyon

  1. 6:00-7:00AM.  Sedonuts (2370 W State Rte 89A #6).  It's the only place open at 6:00AM, fortunately  it is fantastic.  I got the Red Rock Chocolate (chocolate covered red velvet) to eat at Platuea Point later in the day.  TIP:  Check out the only Turquose Arches McDonald's in the same plaza.  Drive to Flagstaff.  With 3 hour time difference, early to bed and early to rise is pretty easy.
  2. 7:00-7:45AM.  The Toasted Owl Cafe (12 S Mikes Pike St in Flagstaff).  Funky spot for breakfast or lunch.  See more below.
  3. 7:45-9:00AM.  Drive to Grand Canyon National Park.
  4. 9:00-10:00AM.  Short Hike along the south rim.  Mather Point (the most photographed spot, think of the Griswalds), to Yavapai point and over to the Bright Angel Trailhead.   You can spend more time and hike up to 13 miles on the South Rim Trail, but we were saving our energy for the long hike down and up the canyon.
  5. 10:00-4:30PM.  Bright Angel Trail.  Hike 6 miles down to Plateau Point and 6 miles back up.  There are rest points each 1.5 miles with water highlighted by the Havasupai Gardens at the 4.5 mile mark.   Plateau Point sits 1300 feet over the Colorado river.
  6. Option:  This is a tough hike all at once, you can stay overnight at Havasupai Gardens campground.
  7. Option:  Rim to River to Rim.  Start early and hike down South Kaibab Trail  to the Colorado River (7.8 Miles) and back up the Bright Angel Trail.   Obviously very difficult but people do it.  You can spend a night at the Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
  8. 4:30-5:00PM.   Bright Angel Fountain.  Thought I would want a beer but Ice Cream was a great choice.
  9. 5:00-6:30PM.   Packed up and headed back to Flagstaff.
  10. 6:30PM-8:00PM.   Mother Road Brewing Company (7 S Mikes Pike St).   An IPA heavy line up, great place for a flight.  Food is good as well, tacos and BBQ, recommend the Tri-Tip Cheese Steak.
  11. 8:00-8:45PM.  Back to Sedona.  Pretty tired,,, check out the Pool and Hot Tub at Sky Ranch Lodge.

Day Three: Sedona

  1. 7:00-8:30AM.  Get Coffee and hike to Devil's Bridge.   The hike is an easy 4 miles roundtrip.  It was crowded early, would recommend east coasters getting up even earlier on their first day to get to the front of the line.   See more below.
  2. 8:45-9:30AM.  Coffee Pot (2050 AZ - 89).  A local favorite, giant menu place, be careful, like most good places, you can find a line.  Good thing it wasn't Saturday.   Recommend "Build Your Own" Breakfast Burrito or Huevos Rancheros.
  3. 10:00-12:00PM.   Pink Jeep Tour, Broken Arrow (204 N State Rte 89A).  Perhaps the most popular, a must do, see more below.
  4. 12:15-1:00PM.  Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village (336 AZ-179).  Shops, restaurants in a small village setting, colorful.
  5. 1:00 to 1:45PM.   Javelina Cantina (671 AZ-179).  Got the combo, delicious, I'm still full.  Yes, I had mexican for breakfast and lunch, just like it.
  6. 2:00-3:45PM.  Slide Rock State Park (6871 N Hwy 89A).  Local thing you gots to do, like Barton Springs in Austin.  A big natural water slide in the middle of paradise.
  7. 4:00PM-5:00PM.  Back to Sky Lodge, shower, sit for a second.
  8. 5:30-6:15PM.  Oak Creek Brewery (2050 Yavapai).  Relaxing back patio with a variety of beers, good place for a flight and some live music.
  9. 6:30-7:30PM.  Sedona Brewing Company (465 Jordan).   Some light and fruity beers and a good IPA lineup.  Another great setting.
  10. 7:45 - 9:00PM.   Dellepiane (7000 AZ-179).  Funky burger bar with large beer menu.  recommend the Poblano Burger but probably can't go wrong with anything that looks good to you.
  11. Full day, that's likely enough.

Day four: Last Breakfast, Hike, head back home

  1. 7:00-8:30AM.  Get Coffee and Hike Cathedral Rock
  2. 8:45-9:30AM.  Mesa Sedona Grill. (2250 89A).  Breakfast with a view, probably a good dinner spot as well.  Beef Brisket Hash, can't go wrong.
  3. 9:30-10:00AM.  Airport Mesa loop trail.    Views from the hill top, Oak Creek on one side, Sedona on the other.
  4. 10:00-10:30AM.  Shower up and check out
  5. 11:00-1:30PM.  Soldiers Pass Trail.   great hike (see below).  Tip:  you will need to park near the dog park about a mile from the trail head, they do have a shuttle.   Never tried it, but maybe you can Lyft to trail heads.
  6. 1:45-4:00PM.  Back to Phoenix.
  7. 4:00PM-6:00PM.   Old Scottsdale
  8. Red-eye back to CBUS.

More tips for a Sedona Trip

  1. More Suggestions, maybe take several 3dayvacations:    Obviously, this was a crazy trip, trying to squeeze this much in a few days, but Kristi is a teacher and we are not doing this stuff in the summer or waiting til retirement.  We will go back.
  2. More to see in Sedona:  Bell Rock, Go to Oak Creek Canyon, visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross.  Other hikes:  Brins Mesa, Birthing Cave, Fay Canyon.
  3. Grand Canyon:   really want to hike all the way down to the Colorado river, spend the night at Phantom Ranch, then back out.

Details & Descriptions

Montezuma Castle

Montezuma Castle National Monument is pretty cool, but not spectacular.  It is worth going to once and it is just off the freeway on the drive from Phoenix to Sedona.

sky ranch lodge

Sky Ranch Lodge sits on a hilltop overlooking Sedona.  Popular wedding venue with views of the red rock formations for miles.

The Hudson

The Hudson is located in the Hillside Shopping Center just outside downtown Sedona.   We sat at the bar (long wait for a table) and enjoyed a variety of Bruchetta, a unique specialty of the Hudson, and a salad.  The menu features a large variety of appetizers and salads, as well as sandwiches, seafood, and steaks.

The Toasted OwL cafe

The Toasted Owl Cafe ls one of our favorite funky breakfast/lunch spots, colorful and adored with owl decorations.   Breakfast burrito enchilada style with green chile sauce is excellent and abundant.  Try the homemade Cinnamon Rolls.

Mather Point

Mather Point is the famous lookout spot you see in movies, it is where you can see the full vastness and grandeur of the Grand Canyon.  However, I could not find the Colorado River to gain perspective of the full depth of the canyon.   Hiking to Plateau Point is in order.

Bright Angel Trail

Bright Angel Trail weaves down the Grand Canyon.  There is a rest area at the 1.5, 3, and 4.5 mile mark.  4.5 miles down lies the Havasupai Gardens.  From there, it's about 1.5 miles of fairly level ground out to Plateau Point with views of the Colorado river 1300 feet below.  NOTE:  we did this hike in 6 hours, 2.5M to Plateau Point, 3.5M back up with several stop sit rests.

Plateau Point

Plateau Point

Plateau Point is a 1.5M level ground hike back and forth from Havasupai Gardens.  The level ground is a relief however you are in the blazing sun.   It was only 70 degrees up top but over 95 degrees at Plateau Point.  Recommendation:  Start your hike early, like 6:00am.

Devils Bridge

Plateau Point

Devil's Bridge is the famous photo op spot.  Not as scary as the pictures look.  We had a long line of people waiting for pictures so we did not get on the bridge.   The hike itself is fantastic, gets a bit step and awkward near the bridge, but that's the fun part.

Soldier pass trail

Pink Jeep, Broken Arrow

Soldier Pass Trail has three highlights and two are a very short distance on level ground, the Devil's Kitchen Sinkhole and the Seven Sacred Pools (very odd pools of water high up in the dry red rock).   From there, the hike is partially shaded and a bit challenging as you climb up to Soldiers Pass Cave.

Pink Jeep, Broken Arrow

Pink Jeep, Broken Arrow

Pink Jeep, Broken Arrow

Pink Jeep Tours, we did the most popular, the Broken Arrow named after a Jimmy Stewart movie from .  Really appreciated the stories of how the rock  were formed by volcano, water and wind over millions of years.  Great way to take in the scenery from different angles and elevations.

The Coffee Pot

Pink Jeep, Broken Arrow

The Coffee Pot

The Coffee Pot has 101 omelletts but I had the Huevos Rancheros.  Really good as was the coffee.  Generous portions with a lean toward mexican.  Next time will get lunch there.
