Austin

Day One: South Congress, Junk, & Rainy

  1. 12:00PM.  Arrived to our Airbnb apartment in East Austin and were able to drop bags.  Great location, near two highly rated breweries on E 6th, Zilker and Lazarus.  Also, a short walk to the Scoot Inn.  We did not rent a car in Austin, choosing Scooters and Lyfts.  TIP:  Scooters are fun but don't feel safe.  Lyft is just a few dollars more.
  2. 1:00PM-3:00AM.  South Congress area.  Home Slice Pizza (1415 S Congress).  Shops of all kinds up and down South Congress, vintage/thrifty, upscale, candy, funky gifts.  See more in the section below.
  3. 3:00-4:00PM.    Cathedral of Junk (4422 Lareina Dr).  Hilarious, you have to do this once, an eccentric guy has built a junk paradise with clocks, signs, furniture, stairways,,,, in the back yard of his neighborhood home.
  4. 4:30-5:00PM.   Check in at East Austin apartment.
  5. 5:30-7:00PM.  Terry Black's Barbeque (1003 Barton Springs Rd).  This place is great, pick out different meats and pay by the pound, everything is good, meat and sides.   I liked the brisket, sausage, and green beans the best.   My only drawback is this is a chain, I really like to eat unique and local, but this is eating local for someone from Ohio.
  6. 7:00-8:30PM.  South Congress Bat Bridge (Congress Bridge over the Colorado River/Lady bird lake).   This is just south of downtown.  We stood on the bridge but people were at viewing areas beside the bridge on either side and on boats of all types on the water.  Riverboats, paddle boats, inner tubes, home made boats -  it was like a Dr. Suess book.
  7. 8:30PM+. Rainey Street.  Nightlife with countless Bars and Food.   Little Lucy donut is a good snack.   My favorite is Stay Put (73 Rainey), great selection of lower ABV beers, and some guest taps.

Day two: Parade, bikes, brews & Scoot Inn

  1. 8:30-11:30AM.  Rockstar Bagels (1900 Rosewood Ave) & Junetenth Parade & Festival.    The bagels were planned but the parade was a surprise.  Very entertaining and celebratory, highlighted by the bands and "pimped out" cars, see picture in section below.   The festival in Rosewood park did not start til 12:00, so we missed out.
  2. 11:45-12:30AM.  Counter Cafe (1914 E 6th).  Fun breakfast/Lunch spot, Soup and 1/2 Turkey was delicious but everything looks good.
  3. 1:00-4:00PM.  Austin Gem Bike and Brewery Tour.  (1710 E. 2nd St).  Murals, Breweries, State Capital, Texas State Cemetery.  Great way to see the highlights of the city and the history of Texas in only 3 hours.  See more in section below.
  4. 4:30-5:30PM.  Went back to apartment, fortunately there was a pool in the complex, fun at the pool with a bunch of 20 somethings starting careers in Austin.
  5. 5:30-6:45M.  Lazarus Brewery (1902 E 6th).   Great german beers, IPAs, and even a Saison.  Simple but good menu with Tacos and Quesadillas.
  6. 7:00 - 9:00PM.  Historic Scoot Inn (1308 E 4th).  This place is too cool.  You can feel the history.  A small venue where you walk around or perhaps find a seat near the bar.  We saw Yacht Rock Review,  see more below.
  7. 9:15PM +.    Grab a beer at Zilker Brewing Company (1701 E 6th).  Strong IPA line up.  Fun Atmosphere, looks like an old service station with indoor and outdoor seating, had a food truck.

Day Three: Barton Springs, Chicken shit bingo & Honky Tonks

  1. 8:30-9:30AM.  Cenote (1010 E Cesar Chavez).  A colorful funky place with good food and drink all day.  Seating inside or out.  Coffee and Breakfast Burrito were great. The food is FRESH, if we had more time, would like to go there for lunch and eat one of the salads.
  2. 10:00-3:00PM.  Barton Springs Bike Rental (1707 Barton Springs Road).  Bike the Lady Bird Bike Trail, we also biked up to Campus and down South Congress to check out several murals.
  3. 12:00-12:45PM.  Torchy's Tacos (several locations, we ended up at 1822 South Congress). Famous Taco chain in Texas and spreading to other states (we have one in Columbus now).
  4. 1:15-2:45PM.    Barton Springs Municipal Pool (2131 William Barton Dr).  You could spend a day here.  Wow, the water was cold (69 degrees), that was a surprise, more in the section below.
  5. 4:00PM-6:00PM.   The LIttle Long Horn Saloon (5434 Burnet Road).  Chicken Shit Bingo is every Sunday from 4 - 8.   Pay $10 for a square.  Kristi actually won when the chicken shit on square 29.  The place is also a honky tonk,,,, felt like this was filled with locals, a real local Austin experience.
  6. 6:00-8:00PM.   W 6th Street bars for live music.   Similar to Broadway in Nashville, you can hop from bar to bar and listen to live music with talented young artists trying to make it big.  You could easily spend a few nights going out to W 6th, how much Broadway in Nashville, Bourbon in New Orleans, Duval in Key West do you have in you?   Picture below.
  7. 8:00-9:00PM.  Easy Tiger (1501 E 7th).  If you like charcuterie boards, this is your place. See more in section below.
  8. Back to airport, heading home.

More tips for An Austin visit

  1. More Suggestions, maybe take several 3dayvacations:     So much to do , so little time.  Hiking, Biking, Boating on the Colorado River (not same river in AZ).   Austin City Limits.  Austin Draft House.     We need another 3dayvacation.
  2. Next time we will go when school is in cession, would like to go to a football game or at least tailgate.  Also, Sixth street is probably more lively.

Details & Descriptions

Juneteenth Parade

Great fun at the parade, just drinking coffee, eating bagels and enjoying the entertainment in the morning sun.

austins gem bike and brewery tour

Austins Gem was a great tour.  Three great breweries, the texas state cemetery, murals, breweries, and state capital were highlights.   Many famous politicians, and military heroes (Chris Kyle), and football legends (Darrell Royal, Tom Landry) are in the cemetery.

Home Slice Pizza

Home Slice PIzza is a funky nepolitan NY style pizza place in Texas.   Pizza was excellent, the kind of place where the simple cheese slice may be the best so you can appreciate the sauce and crust.  Bonus:  Mr. Rogers Mural on side of building and the famous Willie Nelson for President near by.  Picture from Austin Entertainment.

South Congress

Barton springs Muni-Pool

South Congress has a great vibe.   hops of all kinds up and down South Congress, vintage/thrifty, upscale, candy, funky gifts.    Enjoyed a candy store called Big Top with an old school soda fountain and ice cream case.  Also like Monkey See Monkey Do.  Great places to eat:  Home Slice, Torchy's Tacos, lots of Mexican places, coffee shops and some bbq.  Don't you love Mexican Coke?

Historic Scoot Inn

Barton springs Muni-Pool

Barton springs Muni-Pool

Historic Scoot Inn is a small venue dating back to 1871 and has the feel of a large back yard with a stage and a bar.  You can stand near the stage or sit at the bar in the back which is still close to the stage.  Yacht Rock Review is a fun band covering the light rock of the late 70's and early 80's.  The crowd was surprisingly young with women in their 20s and 30s donning captian's hats.

Barton springs Muni-Pool

Barton springs Muni-Pool

Barton Springs Municipal Pool is a natural spring turned into a public pool in Zilker Park.  The water is surprisingly cold which is refreshing in mid-June Austin after 3 hours of biking.  It is much better than the common public pool with the natural setting.  Hang out for families and teenagers. It costs about $9 per person.

Easy Tiger

Easy Tiger is a bakery and restaurant, and like so many places in Austin, a fun atmosphere.   This place leans German, we like charcuterie and giant pretzels, also had a Brat.  Beer garden with big selection.
