Day One: CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK & BREWERIES

  1. From Columbus, we drove up 71N to Peninsula OH, starting the ride at Lock 29.
  2. 11:00-1:00PM.   Cuyahoga  Valley National Park.  Biked south from Lock 29 in Peninsula down to Portage Path where Portage Path and Merriman Rd intersect, about 10 miles.  NOTE:  the Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad was not running.  Next time we bike one way, then load the bikes and train back.  see more below.
  3. 1:00-1:30PM.  Happy Trail Thrift (1770 Merriman Rd).  A thrift store to benefit the local Humane society, like a big garage sale, found an old K-State pennant for a friend.  Mamma Rocks (1698 Merriman), store actually sells rocks, fun to check it out.
  4. 1:30-2:15PM.  R Shea's Brewing (1662 Merriman Rd).   Large selection of beers, Kristi got the Orange Mango Shandy while I got the flight.   R Shea's has an excellent IPA called Three Legends, tons of flavor with ABV in low 6% range.  The food is good, several sandwhiches and Nacho options, recommend the Angry Pig.
  5. 2:15-3:30PM.  Back back to Peninsula at Lock 29.  Peninsula is a charming small town with shops and restaurants.  You could spend some time here.  Biking North from Peninsula will take you past the Boston Mill visiter center, good place for ice cream on summer time trip.
  6. 3:45-4:45PM.  Brandywine Falls (8176 Brandywine Rd).  Must do, see description below.
  7. 5:00-6:15PM.  Check into Cleveland Airbnb (suggest any near Cleveland old burbs, Ohio City, Tremont, Lakewood, etc).
  8. Option:  stay in Akron area.  Go to the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton.  R Shea Brewery downtown is a destination.  Also, HiHo Brewing in Cuyahoga Falls right on the river with views of the falling water is another good experience.  Too much to do.
  9. 6:30-7:30PM.    Forest City Brewery (2135 Columbus Rd in Ohio CIty).  Large variety of beers including a couple belgiums.   They have cans of a Cleveland classic:  POC (Pride of Cleveland), like Old Style in Chicago.   Eastern European menu includes Kielbasa and Perogies, Cleveland.  They have live music also, large place with an old wooden bar and stage.
  10. 8::00PM+.  Music Box Supper Club (1148 Main Ave).  Cover band and entertainment venue in the flats, at the mouth of the Cuyahoga river.  Saw an ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) cover band named ELO TRIBUTE.   see more below.

Day two: West side market, rock and roll HOF, Christmas story

  1. 8:30-9:30AM. West Side Market Cafe (1979 W 25th St).  The Hot Mess, Tex Mex Scramble, Corned Beef Hash, and on the weekend Kielbasa Hash.
  2. 9:30-10:30AM.  West Side Market (1979 W 25th St).  Dating back to 1840, the market has over 100 ethnically diverse vendors, cheese, meat, flowers, fruit, etc.  The building and accompanying 37 foot clock tower are architecturally interesting.
  3. 11:00 - 1:30AM.  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1109 E 9th St).  Exceeded expectations, see more below.
  4. 2:00-3:00PM.  Slyman's restaurant and deli (3106 St Clair Ave).   Famous "biggest and best" corned beef sandwhich -  may need to have two people share one.
  5. 3:00-5:00PM.  Breweries, Cleveland has multiple great local breweries.   A few close to downtown:  Noble Beast (1470 Lakeside Ave), Masthead (1261 Superior), Bookhouse (1526 W 25th), too many to list.
  6. Option:   Funny Bus Tour (1250 Old River Rd).  This tour is in a few cities, looks fun, have never caught it b/c it is not always running and had a Covid shut down.
  7. 5:00-6:30PM.  The Christmas Story House (3159 W 11th St).  Awesome, you can almost here "a tapestry of obscenities" hanging over Lake Michigan (or Erie).  see more below.
  8. 7:00PM+.  Railroad Brewing Company (820 Center Rd in Avon).  A bit out of the way, but we went here b/c the beer and food are good and Nomad Soul , a classic rock cover band.  The food, must get the Fried Brussels and Pierogi plate, Nachos and Chacuterie.

Day Three: Game day

  1. 8:30-9:30AM.  Grumpy's Cafe (2621 W 14th St).  Big servings, recommend the Breakfast Tacos or Walker Hash with Andouille, okra, and cajun home fries.
  2. 10:00-11:30AM.  Experience Cleveland with Browns fans everywhere.  The Cleveland Arcade (401 Euclid Ave), a beautiful building with shoping in downtown cleveland, Cleveland Public Square (50 Public Square), their is a skating rink, Tower City Center (230 W Huron Rd), shopping center with a casino and the location of the Higbees window from the Christmas Story.
  3. 11:30-12:45PM.  Pre-Game in Cleveland, walk down E 4th St  which has a section like an alley with no traffic, grab a beer at Butcher and the Brewer (2043 E 4th St).
  4. 1:00-4:00PM.  Cleveland Browns Game. (100 Alfred Learner Way).  see more below.
  5. 5:00-6:30PM.  Brew Kettle (8377 Pearl in Strongsville).  On way out of town, go to one of the best, bring a designated driver.  White Rajah is one of the best IPAs made in Ohio.  The tap room has a wide variety of beers you can't find in a store and the food is strong, burnt end poutine and a Rueben.

More tips for Cleveland visit

  1. More Suggestions, maybe take several 3dayvacations:     Cleveland is a great sports town, take in an Indians/Guardians day game, spend time in the flats, experience the multi-cultural neighborhoods of Cleveland and many of the ethnic festivals.   Guided neighborhood food walking tours and downtown tours look fun.
  2. Biking the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Akron to Cleveland, using the Scenic Railroad to make it a one-way trip.  Make this a full day.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is Ohio's only National Park.  It spans from Akron to the South to Lake Erie in Cleveland.  The valley was cut by glaciers and the Cuyahoga river. Biking along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath is excellent,  You can bike one way, then catch a ride back on the Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad.

Lock 29 at Peninsula

Lock 29 at Peninsula is a destination on the towpath.  We have parked there twice, in the summer, we went north and ate Ice Cream at the Boston Mill Visitor Center.

Brandywine Falls

cuyahoga valley national park

Music Box Supper Club

Brandywine Falls is a 60 foot water fall which can be observed from the top and bottom.  There is a 1.5 mile loop hike, each season is a different experience, great winter hike.

Music Box Supper Club

Music Box Supper Club

The Music Box Supper Club houses a supper club downstairs and a concert hall upstairs.  Nice venue to see top notch tribute/cover bands.  Check out their calendar which stays updated about six months in advance.   Saw an ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) cover band named ELO TRIBUTE.   They were great, there is a reason you don't hear ELO covers, it's not simple.  The lead singer just might be Jeff Lynne.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland because a Cleveland disc jockey first coined teh term "Rock and Roll" in the early fifties and hosted the first rock concert.  If your interest is high, you can spend hours reading about each exhibit.  There was a continuously running film of old concert footage.

The CHristmas Story House

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Christmas Story House looks exactly like the movie, even the old kitchen and backyard.  In the museum across the street, we met the elf who hurried Ralphie to see Santa.  I would have liked to see Scut Farkus, great name and yellow eyes.  The gift shop has leg lamps and bunny suits.  You can even spend the night at the house.

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have the most loyal fans, they keep showing up even though the Browns have some of the most excruciating disappointments in the NFL.  When the Browns win the Super Bowl, the city will party for a week (or more).
